Emerald Downs Facts:

The Emerald Downs is located in beautiful Auburn, Washington. The track consists of a one mile dirt oval. The track conducts various large stakes from April to October. Emerald Downs was the first Pacific coast track based on mutual horse race wagering. The track has a long history and it has a great following. The feature event at the Emerald Downs is the Longacres Mile, which is a GR III event. The Longacres Mile is now know as "The Mile." In 1935, Joe Gottstein came up with a way to put Washington horse racing on the map. At the time, a mile long race was not the traditional distance in horseracing. It presented an interesting challenge. A winning horse would need both speed and stamina. The mile long race sat in the middle of sprinting and routing. He knew it would take a unique horse to win the event. Emerald Downs offers parimutuel horse race betting.

In 1935, the Longacres Mile was inaugurated with a $10,000 purse. This was absolutely unheard of at the time. The purse stood for four decades as the largest purse for a one-mile race. Today, The Mile is still the richest stakes event west of Chicago and north of the Bay Area. This Grade III race is highly anticipated every year. The Mile Weekend takes place in August and September. A local favorite is the Washington Cup, which takes place on one Sunday in September. It features seven stakes races. The Northwest part of the United Stakes is home to great horse race betting action at Emerald Downs.
