Delaware ParkLive Delaware Park Odds from Bodog RacebookDelaware Park Facts: Like most horse racing venues seated in one of the thirteen original colonies, Delaware Park has a history that traces to colonial times. Back in those days horse racing events were often an attraction at county fairs and informal betting was exchanged between gentlemen. Little did they know just how big horse racing in the country would become. Similar to other horse racing tracks with a long history, Delaware Park RaceTrack did not become 'official' until over 100 years later. Legislation, despite the conservative views on gambling held by state officials, was passed allowing for the creation of the Delaware Racing Commission. This ultimately led to the official creation of the Delaware Park. Leading the way was businessman William DuPont Jr, who had successfully designed 23 other race courses. A large parcel of land was purchased in Stanton for the Delaware Park and it was finally completed in the spring of 1937. It was a magnificent horse racing venue. A natural progression from prior DuPont designs, Delaware Park was a combination of elegant design and thoughtful construction. The Delaware Park was originally capable of hosting 7,500 spectators and providing stables for 1,226 horses. The main race course was a one-mile dirt oval. A brief closure during World War Two temporarily interrupted the action at Delaware Park. However, the Delaware Park was not to be down for long. It reopened before the war's end to sold-out events that saw more than 288,000 people enjoy horse racing action. Horse racing was a min event in the culture and it still is to this very day. Twenty years after Delaware Park Racetrack first opened its doors, a $2.8 million dollar expansion was initiated. The new renovation at Delaware Park included doubling the seating capacity at Delaware Park, introducing closed circuit televisions and installing the facilities first winner's circle in view of the grandstand. It was a long overdue renovation and the horse racing fans at Delaware Park absolutely loved it. Opening day at the Delaware Park Racetrack is a must watch. Each year in the mid of July the racetrack opens for the summer racing events at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The Delaware Handicap is an exciting annual event that takes place in the middle of July. The Delaware Handicap features fillies and mares that are ages three and up. These horses race around a dirt track. The Delaware Handicap is a one and one-quarter mile race and carries a purse of $1,000,000. In 2005, horse racing fans were treating to a powerful horserace when Island Sand rushed across the finish line to capture the $1,000,000 purse. Island Sand won the race by 3 and ¾ lengths. Sadly, Island Sand has retired from horse racing and will not be returning. Listen, winning is all about options.
